Beer Lovers toast to 8%
Beer lovers around the state of Mississippi can finally toast for stronger brews around the state. Governor Of Mississippi Phil Bryant signed into law a bill that will now raise the Alcohol-by-weight in beer from the current 5 percent to 8 percent. Senate Bill 2878 will go in effect July 1 and will expand the variety of beers that are now sold in the state. About 70 of the top 100 brands of beer in the world will now be sold on the shelves and on tap.
Many locals around the state are saying today “it’s a great day to be a Mississippian!”
The 8 percent alcohol translate to about 10.1 percent volume of alcohol. Mississippi is one of two states to measure by weight, the other state being Utah. Even with the upgrade Mississippi will still have one of the lowest Alcohol content compared to the states neighboring it.
The Bill did have some trouble at first passing. Many people opposed the change because they had issues with driving under the influence and how it could be more increased. The more alcohol intake the more accidents that could happen. However the Bill was passed and Mississippi can raise their pints to 8 percent.
