Put A Star On It
Oxford is known as one of the safest towns in the state of
Mississippi. A lot of this is due to a tight knit community with an abundance
of southern hospitality and a pride for manners. What some people do not
realize about this quaint little town is that it is the headquarters for the
United States Marshal Service for the Northern District of Mississippi.
The Marshal Service is the oldest federal law enforcement
agency in the United States. The US Marshal Service has a variety of jobs; they
provide court security for federal judges, they serve warrants, provide witness
protection, and investigate sex offenders. Some of the most highly trained
individuals live right here in Oxford.
Inside the Federal Courthouse on the Square lies a group of
men and women that dedicate their lives to catching some of the nation’s most
dangerous fugitives. The Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force is based right
here in Oxford. The Task Force was responsible for the arrest of the
Mississippi State shooter earlier this spring.
As well as the Task Force, Oxford is also home to the US
Marshal Sex Offender Investigation Unit. It is their job to keep tabs on all
sex offenders located in the Northern District of Mississippi.
They make sure that they know the residences of every sex
offender; they know if one leaves the state or enters the state, and they also
make sure that all sex offenders register on time. The most rewarding part of
their job knows that they are preventing further crimes from happening.
It is a dangerous job, but they help keep the residents of
this town and this entire state safe. They don’t ask for a lot of recognition
and most of the time you will never realize that they are even there. They are
set apart by their training and a star, and that is enough for them.
