Turkey Hunting Becomes an American Pastime

Turkey hunting is a pastime handed down from generation to generation. Every year when the flowers start to bloom anxious hunters await that first gobble. There is just nothing else that compares to hunting these cunning birds.

The standard equipment for turkey hunting is nothing special. Hunters don camouflage from head to toe and the weapon of choice is the 12-gauge shotgun.

“When turkey season comes around I put all my trust into my Benelli shotgun,” says avid turkey hunter James Kelly. “ I believe they make the best shotguns on the market today. It has constantly put birds on the ground for me year after year.

What can separate a good hunter from a great one is the calling. There are all sorts of calls on the market today, from wing bones to the recently built gobble calls. The thing beginner turkey hunters need to do is find a call that they sound good on, and just stick with it.

One of the main reasons that turkey hunting is becoming a more popular sport is the National Wild Turkey Federation. The NWTF is dedicated to preserving the wild turkey and it’s habitat. They also focus on introducing young hunters into the sport.

With more hunters getting into the turkey craze it looks like the sport will continue to flourish. With the efforts of the NWTF the American wild turkey will continue to hold a key spot in the American hunting tradition. There is just something about hearing that thunderous gobble.
